New Year’s Resolution: More active learning in the college classroom

January 1, 2020 by Joe Cannon Leave a Comment

Let’s kick off the new year right — and resolve to add more active learning to your classroom.

I recently received an email from Harvard Business School that touted three articles promoting active learning in the college classroom. Check these out for more ideas about how to create a more engaging class for your students:

  • “Overcoming Peer Learning Phobia” describes Harvard Kennedy School lecturer Tim O’Brien’s use of the Socratic method in his classes. I like that this article offers some practical, easy-to-implement practices you can add to your class.
  • Next, in “Why All Classes Should Be Safe and Noisy,” Rutgers University Professor of Teaching Patricia O’Brien-Richardson offers five specific in-class strategies.

All these articles cite research that supports the approach. Just one more reason to email (send to Joe.Cannon at colostate.edu) and ask for your free copy of Flip Your Marketing Classroom and for samples of our In-Class Activities designed specifically for Essentials of Marketing. Check them out and try something new in your marketing class.

“What’s Now?” It’s one of the new features in Essentials of Marketing 15e

June 23, 2016 by Joe Cannon Leave a Comment

EM15CoverWe are pleased to unveil a new feature with this edition of Essentials of Marketing. One of the challenges we face with writing a marketing textbook is offering students the most current examples. With this edition, we have added a new What’s Now? feature. A link at the end of each chapter sends readers to a web page that introduces them to a new example relevant to that chapter. What’s Now? links are updated every six months and provide a great way to link current events with each chapter of the book. These exercises are designed to give your students current, constantly updated content with relevant questions. The direct links can be found in the “What’s Now?” section at the end of each chapter.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be releasing a What’s Now? link for each chapter.

Why do people share certain online videos?

February 3, 2016 by Joe Cannon Leave a Comment

The question in this headline is an important one for marketing managers. Many companies like the “pass-along” strategy where customers share content with other customers. Recipients of the message are more likely to pay attention when it comes from a trusted source.

Here at Teach the 4 Ps we have posted about what makes for viral content. And the just-published 15th edition of Essentials of Marketing includes a new What’s Next? box that discusses Jonah Berger’s STEPPS framework. This NPR story, “What Compels People To Share Certain Videos?” (February 1, 2016) references Berger but offers some additional ideas from Shifman

As an in-class activity, you could discuss Berger’s STEPPS framework and Shifman’s thoughts and ask the students if any of these Super Bowl ads seem to have the potential for pass-along.
