Give yourself a break, and lower your cognitive load while teaching…

August 30, 2021 by Joe Cannon Leave a Comment

I have always enjoyed Harvard Business School Publishing’s offerings. I teach a lot of MBA classes and use many of the site’s readings and cases to supplement my teaching. I have found the HBSP a wealth of support beyond just the materials it provides for its students. And over the last year, it seems like the site has doubled down on its support — or maybe just the challenge of pandemic teaching sent me there more often. Any educator can get an account at the site and that gives you access to lots of resources — including sample cases and articles.

One area that has been useful to my teaching is HBSP’s Inspiring Minds section – “motivating lessons and practical advice from the best in class.” I am always looking for tips on how to improve my teaching and you can find tons of ideas here.

A recent article by Bill Shiano, “Reducing Cognitive Overload While Teaching” really struck home with me. And while some of the examples are designed for the challenge of teaching synchronously online, the tips valuable for traditional in-class teaching as well. Especially in an online course (I taught only on Zoom last year), there are so many things to manage. As you get ready for fall — which may include (now or later) online, hybrid, or face-to-face teaching — consider checking out Schiano’s tips.

Seattle’s Zero-Emissions Last-Mile Delivery Hub

August 23, 2021 by Joe Cannon Leave a Comment

Earlier this month, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued its latest report on the climate. It was not encouraging and clearly points to the need for the world to limit carbon emissions. Many cities and businesses are stepping already trying to do just that.

One opportunity for lowering emissions is the so-called “last mile” for online retail. This is the delivery to customers’ homes and businesses. This is seen as lower hanging fruit. So the city of Seattle is experimenting with some low-cost options, including cargo bikes, electric vehicles and pallets, and food trucks. This opportunity is leading to some innovation around delivery.

This Fast Company article describes “Seattle’s new zero-emissions delivery hub is an experiment in slashing e-commerce emissions.” This video (also shown below) describes some of that innovation. In Essentials of Marketing, we discuss innovation as a benefit of marketing (Chapter 1) and as part of new product development (Chapter 9). And of course this topic is relevant to distribution (see chapters 10, 11, and 12) Our textbook also covers sustainability in chapters 1 and 19.

Fall Semester Arrives and Teach the 4 Ps Returns…

August 22, 2021 by Joe Cannon Leave a Comment

Just like many of you (I hope), Teach the 4 Ps took some time away from teaching this summer. In fact, I (Joe) was able to travel and see family and friends that I had not seen in at least a couple of years. I hope that you were able to do the same. Like many of you, my last few weeks have been consumed with getting ready for fall classes. Our classes here at Colorado State University start tomorrow. I am the author of an introductory marketing textbook – Essentials of Marketing.

Now that the semester is about to start, I will start making regular posts. This site is designed to support marketing instructors looking for current and interesting marketing examples and activities they can add to their course. The coverage is pretty general, so any marketing instructor can find something of interest here. The “Categories” have general marketing topics and also use “Chapter” numbers keyed to Essentials of Marketing. If you click on the Category chapter number or topic area, you will see a bunch of posts over the years that connect with the topic or chapter. Starting today, I will be posting once or twice a week.

If you have any ideas for posts, please send them to Joe[dot]Cannon[at]colostate.edu.
