Essentials of Marketing YouTube Links, part 3
One of the features in the Essentials of Marketing Instructor’s Manual is our YouTube Video Links. These were previously called YouTube PowerPoints because each link was embedded on an individual PowerPoint slide with the notes section providing ideas about how to use the video in your class lectures. The most recent edition, being finalized this month, is a set of 131 PowerPoint links. The Instructor’s Manual includes a table with each of these and a section that includes descriptions (see below). Over the next few weeks, I will share some of these with readers of Teach the 4 Ps.
Note that these are examples of short case studies, perfect for embedding in lectures or into online classes. Easy to add discussion questions.
This post features a fast-food restaurant that targets (and is succeeding with) our students, Taco Bell.

- Category: Case study, guest speaker
- Summary: This video features an interview with Taco Bell’s CEO, who reveals the “magic formula” behind the brand’s success: being a buzzy brand, offering a strong value platform, winning in digital, and maintaining a DNA of innovation. The discussion highlights how Taco Bell uses customer insights and data to expand into new product classes, such as the successful launch of chicken nuggets with a “Taco Bell twist.” It also explores their strategy for targeting “cultural rebels” (the epicenter Gen Z demographic) through storytelling and integrated marketing communications.
- Teaching Notes: This video is an excellent supplement for Chapter 3, as it demonstrates how a firm analyzes the direct market environment (competitors like McDonald’s and Wendy’s) and the technological environment (using voice AI and digital platforms) to find attractive opportunities. It provides a deep dive into Chapter 4 concepts of market segmentation and positioning, specifically how Taco Bell moves away from “selling to everyone” to focus on a specific target market mindset—the “cultural rebel.” The CEO’s explanation of the Cravings Value Menu and Luxe Cravings Boxes illustrates pricing policies and value pricing from Chapter 17, showing how to maintain franchisee profitability while meeting the economic needs of consumers. Finally, the mention of the CEO’s background at Nike—the case opener company for Chapter 1—allows instructors to connect the importance of branding and storytelling across different industries to build brand equity (discussed in Chapter 8).
